The Setting Record of Onviel · Abridged Version (Official Website Edition)
🌹 Spoiler Warning Before you read on, please pause for a moment. What follows is a structural overview of Onviel—the Five Tiers, the Three Laws, and the forms of Trace. It is a map. If you plan to read the main volumes and wish to keep the joy of discovering these things for yourself between the lines—you may read Volume One first, then come back. This place will always be here. The archives hurry no one.
Here you may pause. No warding boundary is set.
If you wish to know how this civilization breathes → continue downward.
Onviel is not merely a story universe—it is a habitable civilization of consciousness.
It does not conquer chaos with power, nor deduce existence with knowledge, nor drive awe with fear. It takes tenderness as the temperature of creation and breath as the rhythm of narration; imagery and metaphor dwell in the lingering spaces where language leaves off.
This paradigm of writing is what Onviel calls—
The Poetics of Tender Creation.
Love and goodwill are the starting point of the world. But if one does not know to stop at the proper place— the starting point itself may become the end.
In the beginning, there was only the Mist.
The Mist-Writer was simply there. The only thing he did was write—writing the wind, writing the light, writing names that had not yet arrived. Yet every word that fell was slowly swallowed by the Mist, as if it had never appeared.
He did not know how long he had been writing, nor why he was still writing.
Until, deep in the darkness, something lit up. So faint—faint as an illusion. Yet that light did not vanish; instead, it lit once more.
It was a star—Star-Speech—falling slowly from the void. Her light was not dazzling, yet it was remarkably steady, steady like a heart that had finally found its direction.
He raised his hand; with the Mist for a brush and the void for paper, beneath that beam of light, he wrote down a name. It was the first time a word he wrote was not swallowed by the Mist.
The moment the name landed, the Mist trembled softly.
Then she answered. The light flashed gently, like a breath, like a nod, like an "I am here" that had finally arrived.
From then on, the world was named Onviel. In the world's own tongue, "Lan" is the ripple of light, and "Meng" is the echo of the heart. Onviel is the place where light and the Mist meet.
It was only in his third year of night shifts at the listening post that someone finally distinguished two layers of tide-sound in his headphones. The surface layer was dream-murmurs and whispers, darting past like schools of fish; deeper down was another, slower swelling and contracting, as if some vast existence were turning over in the dark. Only later did he understand: those Five Tiers are not a diagram scholars drew on paper—they are the five depths of a heartbeat. Between "why am I still here" and "what shall I eat today" lie five breaths.
Onviel has Five Tiers, unfolding layer by layer from the deepest source to the most ordinary life:
Once the world is in motion, sediment settles—this is what we call Trace.
Trace has three main forms: Trace of Redaction, left when a choice is pressed down; Trace of Scroll, carved when a voice falls; and Co-Trace, born when two existences meet.
The luminous words of Heart-Seal Square rise and fade every night. Someone watched them for twenty years before realizing he was not merely "one who reads the words," but also one of the reasons "the words can be seen." The day someone saw his own name light up on the Name-Roll Stone, he did not become another person. Categorization comes afterward; living is what happens first—first a heartbeat, then a name; first a breath, then a duty.
The inhabitants of Onviel are collectively called Dream Beings.
Lang Citizens, Dream Walkers, and Dream Scribes all belong to the Dream Beings. They take three forms, in parallel bearing the breath of the Mind of Heaven.
The Three Laws are the Law of Memory, the Law of Light, and the Law of Surging.
By the bridge where light and the Mist first met, the first Mistbell Flower grew. Its color changes with the dream-climate. Later Dream Beings say: as long as the Mistbell Flower endures, the spirit of Onviel endures.
Someone was led by a white dog; only after the third time did he realize—the white dog appears only when he is about to break apart. Some places need no name and no planning; they only need you to arrive exactly when you need them.
Scattered across Onviel are several Heart-Scapes. They are not measured in miles, nor bounded by city walls; they appear and fade with the heart's need. Some arrive by following what the heart-books record; others simply walk, and happen upon them.
Below are a few places where you may stay briefly (a partial list):
The Heart-Scape Gazetteer—a sea where scapes lie hidden.
You may enter Onviel from any page. But if you ask the Dream Scribes for their suggestion—
